Your resume may be the culprit. The competition for most jobs is fierce and recruiters are overwhelmed by the amount of resumes they receive for job openings. It is not uncommon for recruiters to look through several hundred resumes for just one job posting. With the odds stacked up against you, it is vital that your resume create impact and make a great first impression. An employer wants to quickly find out why they should invite you an for an interview. If you are not providing this information in a clear and compelling manner, they will simply move on the next resume. 2) Poor layout The visual layout and appearance of your resume is just as important as the content. Be sure to use an appropriate format with well-defined sections that allow for the reader to quickly find the information they are seeking. A typical resume format will include the following resume sections: Summary of Experience or Profile Significant Accomplishments Work Experience Education Training or Certifications 3) Size matters There is no set rule about the length of your resume but conventional wisdom suggests that if you are a recent grad or entry level job seeker, you should have a one page resume. If you have been working for over 5 years, then a two page resume will probably make sense. You want to make sure to include as much relevant information to convey your experience in a way that demonstrates your fit for the position. Keep in mind your resume is not your life story, if you find yourself going past page three you will want to look for ways to pare it down. Remember, you have about 20 seconds to make your impression. 4) Lack of accomplishments Your resume accomplishments section is your chance to shine and really connect with the employer. Companies are looking for the best of the best and this section will tell the employer why you should be the one they hire. Many job seekers have a difficult time pointing to significant achievements, so here are some questions to ask yourself. What problems have you solved? What policies or procedures have you devised? Have you been selected to train other employees? What have you changed or improved anything? Have you exceeded your goals? Have you won any awards? Have you received recognition from management or peers? 5) Poor Grammar, typos and mistakes Over half of all resumes are said to contain at least one error (!). When recruiters are looking to screen out resumes, an error or typo can make all the difference. The impression that errors in resumes make is that you are a careless person and do not possess the attention to detail that is required in many positions. Be sure to read your resume several times, run it through a spell checker and then have at least two other people read it over as well. It is also wise to print out a copy of your resume as you may pick out mistakes that you may have missed while reading it on your computer screen. Understanding Generation Z’s Expectations of the Working World The new workforce generation, known as Generation Z, will bring a wealth of emerging talent to organisations across the UK. While it’s too early to know exactly how these digital natives, born from 1995 onwards, will want to work, it’s not too early to start understanding more about their expectations. Analysts at Goldman Sachs believe Generation Z will be just as, if not more, influential than their Millennial predecessors (born 1977-1994). With such strong predictions we’ve been helping to bring employers together with Generation Z to discuss each other’s expectations of working together. Our aim is to increase the understanding about what each side has to offer, to help organisations to attract and retain the latest talent emerging from our schools, colleges and universities. The discussions have shown some common themes of what Generation Z are looking for in their first career roles. They want to have a voice: While they fully appreciate they are just starting out, they are looking for organisations where they feel their ideas and contributions will be listened to. They don’t want to feel in the dark because of their age or title. Employers should look to create an inclusive culture where new ideas can be expressed. One way we are seeing employers achieve this is through senior directors actively seeking out younger mentors. They understand that a new generation could look at things from a completely new angle and that their enthusiasm should be encouraged, but also channelled. They like to feel valued: This is a generation which is keen to understand their specific contribution and the overall impact this has on the organisation. To keep them engaged it will be important to make them feel appreciated. One way to achieve this is for employers to show how much value they place on this generation’s digital skills and to encourage younger employees to use these to positive effect. While Millennials were seen to be tech-savvy, Generation Z are true digital natives. They don’t remember a time before the internet and social media and smart technology has always been a way of life. They don’t want to be stereotyped: Some articles are already painting Generation Z as gratitude-craving, narcissistic, competitive and disloyal, so it’s not surprising that being stereotyped is a concern. They also don’t want to be pigeon-holed as the generation with weak face-to-face skills. Despite the perception of teenagers being consistently locked into a digital world, many have still taken customer facing jobs while studying. Employers shouldn’t assume that certain generations will all want the same thing, or act in the same way. Ask them what they want from their professional lives, what motivates them, and how they like to communicate etc. It’s important to understand what motivates people as individuals. They are keeping their options open: This generation no longer expects a job for life and many are choosing to take more generic degrees to keep their options open. Ideally they would like to be able to try different career paths before committing to one and they are concerned about getting stuck in a role with no development opportunities. Talent retention could be difficult as studies have shown that 83% of today’s students believe that three years or less is the appropriate amount of time to spend in their first job. Once employers have attracted Generation Z they should look to provide effective and frequent training, professional development opportunities and a variety of different work experiences to maintain a high level of engagement and to encourage retention. They want flexibility and an ethical culture: More than any other generation, flexible working and a good work-life balance is likely to be highly important to Generation Z. Recent statistics show that a friendly environment and allowance for flexible schedules were in the top five attributes this generation will look for in a job. They are also keen to work for an ethical organisation with values that appeal to them. To create a culture which is attractive to Generation Z employers should consider the flexible working practices they can offer and also build on their employer brand by highlighting the social responsibility side of the business. They are not sure what opportunities are available: We’re consistently hearing that Generation Z are not entirely sure what opportunities await them. This provides organisations with the chance to proactively engage with this generation and to highlight the career progression they can provide. This is especially relevant for SMEs as this is the type of business this generation feels particularly detached from. They are likely to be drawn to larger cities and big organisations where the graduate and training roles may be more widely publicised. Take Our Children to Work Day Workplace reform can begin with you The twenty-something set mistakenly believes that men and women are equals at work; meanwhile, the wage gap between men and women continues to increase. The wage gap doesnt affect women until they have a kid when they are way too busy juggling work and family to shout out to the world about the wage gap. But there is hope: April 24 is Take Our Children to Work Day, an event that aims to draw attention to the fact that the corporate world stifles the careers of people who take care of kids mostly women. The event used to be Take our Daughters to Work, but at this point, the problem is not getting women into the management track, it is getting them to stay there. Last year the United States General Accounting Office released the Women in Management Study which found that women and men have roughly equal levels of education and equal numbers in the work force. But industry by industry, evidence of the wage gap persists. For example, a full-time female communications manager earned 86 cents for every dollar a male made in her industry in 1995. In 2000, she made only 73 cents on the mans dollar. A little digging into the study shows that the pay gap was widest among parents, and that in management positions women have a harder time than men doing the career-family balancing act. Across all industries, 60 percent of male managers have children in the home compared to only 40 percent of women managers. So whats the best way to reach the ranks of senior management? Dont have kids. Women in management make less than men because women find it much harder than men to continue the long, hard hours that management demands once they have kids at home. Are you one of the women who think this problem will not affect you? Are you thinking you will be able to balance kids and climb the ladder? Then youll need a stay-at-home-dad to raise your kids. A recent issue of Fortune magazine ran a cover article about how most moms who are high in the ranks of corporate America have a husband at home taking care of the kids. Good luck finding a guy to do that. The men featured in the article were so humiliated at their position that most refused to be interviewed. One of the biggest barriers to change is that women dont perceive that theres a problem until they have a high-powered job, two screaming kids, and a husband who says, I support equality; Lets hire a nanny so we can both work. At this point, the woman is overwhelmed by the demands on her life, and less likely than the man to be satisfied with the nanny solution. These women have little energy to advocate for change in the workplace in fact, they usually cut back or drop out (hence the wage gap). So take a kid to work on April 24. Even if you dont have a kid, borrow a kid. These kids will run in and out of cubicles, scribble on white boards, raid the office fridge, and generally have a great time. Hopefully, they will also disrupt everyones day, annoy the workaholics, and remind people that the corporate ladder does not accommodate people who take care of children. The first step toward change is to engage in serious discussion. This is not happening now, but it might start happening if change leaders identify themselves on April 24 by bringing a kid to work. These are the people who will help the next generation of parents close the wage gap; these are the people who will scheme with you to reform the workplace. Take notice of the other people who show up with kids. Band together and start your own workplace revolution.

Interviews can be tough and there isnt a person out there who enjoys them. If youve got one lined up, you might be wondering how you can make yourself stand out from everyone else. From calming your nerves to answering difficult questions, Ill be taking you through my top five tips to help you ace a difficult interview. Prepare beforehand It always helps to prepare before an interview. In the days leading up to it, look through the job advert and pick out any areas they might ask you about. Write down the points youd like to cover to showcase your experience and expertise in response to each question. Then, research the company, including their company ethos and USPs. Not only will this help you get a better understanding of your interviewers,  but taking an interest in the business can show youll be dedicated to the role. Beat the interview nerves Its normal to feel nervous before an interview, but the key is to not let your nerves outshine your talent. Before your interview, try a few things to help you relax, like drinking some herbal tea or trying a bit of mindful breathing. This will slow your heart rate and stop you speaking too quickly when youre sitting in front of your interviewers. You should also try to avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee before your interview, as these can raise your heart rate and make you even more shaky. It can help to plan something nice for after your interview. It could be something small, like going home and watching a film, or something more exciting, like a meal out or a weekend away. Whatever it is you have planned, itll give you something nice to focus on, instead of your pre-interview jitters. Perfect your body language When you enter the interview room, remember to smile, shake everyones hand, and sit with good posture. Although youll want to sit comfortably, try not to lean back or slouch in the chair, as this can give off the wrong impression. Instead, try to leave a small gap between your back and the seat and sit up straight. Then, keep your head up and try to maintain regular eye contact with each interviewer as you speak. You might be tempted to place your hands underneath the table to hide your shaking, but this can make you seem unconfident. Instead, have your hands out on the table in front of you, but never cross them, as this can make you seem uninterested. If youre worried about fidgeting in your interview, ask for a glass of water before you go in. Then, if you feel like you need to fidget, take a drink instead. This will also give you time to collect your thoughts if youre faced with a tough question. Answer those difficult questions A good interviewer will always ask at least one tough question. Not only is this to see how you will answer, but how well you can cope under pressure and think of solutions on the spot. Heres how to answer some of those tricky questions: Whats your biggest weakness? Mention only one weakness here and try to avoid cliché answers like Im too much of a perfectionist. Instead, think of an actual, genuine weakness and give an example of how youve overcome it to avoid being too negative and putting them off. For example, maybe youve struggled to maintain a work life balance, so now you leave your laptop at work to avoid checking emails. Why do you want to work for us? State why you feel youd be a good fit for the company. Do you like their approach to their work? Do you feel you could really make a difference to the company? Why should I hire you? Differentiate yourself from the competition. Are you capable of getting on with things? Are you a fast learner? Are you able to adapt to different roles quickly? Ask your own questions Usually, at the end of the interview, the interviewer will ask if you have any questions of your own. This is where researching the business beforehand will really pay off. Show your interest in the company by asking at least one question. For example, you could ask about opportunities to progress or the day-to-day activities of the role. Remember that the interviewer is also trying to sell the role to you, so you could also ask them what they like about working there so you can get a better feel for the company. Youll never feel fully prepared for the questions youll be faced with. But, by following the tips in this guide, youll know what to do to ace that tough interview. Just remember to stay calm and be yourself so you can let your talent and personality blow them away.
